How Accurate Is IP Geolocation? Country vs City Accuracy Explained
IP geolocation is very accurate for country and rough for city. Here is how accurate it really is, why your location can look wrong, and how to read an IP lookup result.

If you have ever looked up your own IP address and seen a city 50 km away, or a different state entirely, you have run into the limits of IP geolocation. It is very good at some things and genuinely bad at others. This guide explains how accurate IP geolocation really is, why it gets your location wrong, and how to read a lookup result sensibly.

You can check what your own IP reveals right now with our IP lookup tool, then come back and compare it with what you read below.

The short answer: accurate for country, rough for city

IP geolocation accuracy is not one number. It depends on how precise you need the answer to be. MaxMind, one of the longest-running geolocation data providers, publishes these typical ranges in its IP geolocation accuracy guide:

Level Typical accuracy (MaxMind)
Country Generally above 99%, especially when VPN traffic is excluded
State or province Typically 55% to 80%, depending on the country
City Typically 20% to 75%

So when a lookup says your IP is in Australia, it is almost certainly right. When it says you are in a particular suburb, treat that as a guess about where your provider's network is, not where you are sitting.

MaxMind also notes that accuracy tends to be higher for larger, densely populated cities, especially on residential internet connections.

Does my IP address reveal my exact location?

No. An IP address has no GPS coordinates built into it. Geolocation databases map blocks of addresses to the place where a network is registered or observed in use. That is why IP geolocation can point at a region, while your phone's GPS can point at your front door.

Two details make this clearer:

  • Coordinates are approximate by design. Many lookups, including ours, return a latitude and longitude. That point is usually the centre of a city or region, not a street address. MaxMind describes an "accuracy radius", a circle in which the IP is likely to be, rather than a precise point. BigDataCloud says it rounds coordinates to the nearest kilometre for the same reason.
  • Your street address is not in the data. Only your internet provider can link an IP address to a customer account, and they generally hand that over only under a legal process. A public lookup cannot see it.

Why is my IP geolocation wrong?

If your lookup shows the wrong city, one of these is usually the reason.

1. You are on a mobile network

Mobile carriers share and move addresses across huge areas. MaxMind points out that a cellular IP can move between users who are hundreds of kilometres apart within a few minutes. Mobile results often resolve to a broad region, or to the city where the carrier's gateway sits.

2. You are using a VPN, proxy, or privacy relay

A VPN replaces your IP with the VPN server's IP, so the lookup shows the server's location. That is the point of a VPN. If you expected to see your real location and did not, run our privacy and leak check to confirm nothing else, such as a DNS or WebRTC leak, is giving it away.

3. Your provider routes traffic through another city

Smaller ISPs often send all their customers' traffic through a single hub. Everyone on that network can appear to be in the hub city, even if they live hours away.

4. Corporate, satellite, or hosting networks

Company networks can send staff traffic out through a head office or a cloud gateway in another country. Satellite networks vary a lot by operator. Addresses that belong to data centres (cloud hosting) geolocate to the data centre, not to the person using a service hosted there.

5. The address block recently changed hands

IPv4 addresses are scarce and are bought, sold, and reassigned between networks. When a block moves, databases can take time to catch up, so the old location lingers.

Which IP geolocation tool is the most accurate?

There is no single winner for every address. Providers build their data from different sources, such as regional internet registry records, network measurements like traceroutes, and data that networks submit themselves. One provider may be better on Australian residential ranges, while another is better on mobile carriers in Europe.

A practical approach:

  • Compare more than one source if a location really matters to you.
  • Trust the country and the network owner (ASN and ISP) far more than the city or coordinates. These come from registry records and are much more stable.
  • Check how often the data is refreshed. Our free IP geolocation API uses DB-IP data updated monthly, with ipinfo enrichment and live reverse DNS.

Is IP tracking illegal?

Looking up an IP address is not illegal in itself. Every website you visit receives your IP address, because that is how the reply gets back to you, and geolocating it to a country or city is routine. It is how sites pick a language, a currency, or show region-specific content.

What you do with the data is where the law comes in. Privacy laws such as the GDPR in Europe can treat an IP address as personal data, which affects how a business must store and disclose it. Rules differ by country, so if you collect IP data for a business, check the privacy rules where you and your users are. This article is general information, not legal advice.

How to read an IP lookup result

When you look up an address, here is how much weight to give each field:

  • Country and country code: high confidence for most connections that are not a VPN.
  • ASN and organisation (ISP): high confidence. This tells you who runs the network, which is often more useful than the city. You can explore networks on pages like our AS13335 (Cloudflare) page.
  • Region or state: moderate confidence.
  • City, postal code, and coordinates: low to moderate confidence. Treat these as "somewhere around here".
  • Timezone: usually follows the region, so it is about as reliable as the region.

What this means for developers

If you build with IP geolocation, design for the accuracy you actually get:

  • Use the country for things like currency, language, and content licensing.
  • Use the city only as a default that users can change, for example a pre-filled delivery suburb.
  • Never use an IP location as proof of where someone is for anything high-stakes.
  • Flag VPN, hosting, and mobile ranges when they matter to your use case.

Our free IP geolocation API returns country, region, city, coordinates, timezone, ASN, ISP, and hostname for any IPv4 or IPv6 address as JSON. You get 100 requests a day with no key, or 1,000 a day with a free key.

Key takeaways

  • IP geolocation is very accurate at country level (MaxMind cites above 99%) and much rougher at city level (20% to 75%).
  • An IP address never reveals your street address on its own.
  • Mobile networks, VPNs, ISP routing, and reassigned address blocks are the main reasons a location looks wrong.
  • Trust the country and the network owner more than the city or the map pin.
